Winner of the Specialist Contractor Award

9-Specialist contractor-winner (2)

50-60 Station Road

50-60 Station Road, by Dane Architectural Systems Holdings Ltd and Grimshaw, is a major commercial and retail development located within the Central Cambridge Conservation Area. The façade incorporates a number of different elements, including horizontal brise-soleils, curtain walling and glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) cladding. The latter was chosen for its durability, environmental credentials, and ability to accommodate precise sculptural shapes.

Specialist contractor Dane Architectural Systems worked with the main contractor Galliford Try to price the project, which was tendered with reconstituted stone beams and fins, punched curtain walling, and more than 600 penetrations to support the masonry elements.

Dane proposed a full curtain-wall grid wrap, providing a single weather and thermal line. It also suggested changing the stone cladding to GRC hung from the curtain-wall grid. The design was approved by the client Brookgate as it was cost effective and structurally feasible.
