Specialist Contractor Award
Winner of the Specialist Contractor Award
Designed by RPP Architects, Grand Central Station, Belfast, is the largest integrated transport hub on the island of Ireland, combining rail, bus, and active travel links in a single, landmark facility. Specialist contractor Williaam Cox played a key role in the success of the project, designing, fabricating, supplying, and installing Schüco façade systems incorporating more than 9,000-square-metres of glass.
The primary Schüco FW 80+ XR curtain wall system spans up to 14.5 metres in height and 145 metres in length. These dimensions introduced significant engineering challenges around thermal expansion, structural movement, and maintaining airtightness and alignment across uninterrupted spans. To overcome this, Williaam Cox developed bespoke expansion pads and high-tolerance bracketry systems capable of absorbing movement without compromising visual or structural integrity. These elements were customengineered in-house, with the specialist contractor’s engineering team working closely with structural engineer Arup, façade consultant Greene Facades, and RPP Architects to ensure every connection detail met the aesthetic and technical objectives.
Another significant challenge involved integrating blast-rated doors within the glazed screens. The openings required the design and installation of reinforced steel goalpost structures to provide adequate support and transfer loads around the doors. This in turn required precise detailing and advanced coordination with the architect and façade consultant to maintain consistency in sightlines and thermal performance.
Fire safety was addressed with internal fire-rated glazed screens and doors using the Schüco FW 50+ FR 60 system. These provided 60 minutes of integrity and insulation, while also aligning with the external façade. A fully glazed lift core enclosure and external structural glass canopies were also delivered, contributing to the project’s transparent civic identity.
High-performance Guardian SNX 60 triple-silver-coated glass, manufactured by Carey Glass, was specified for its clarity, solar control, and insulation. DUCO Wall Classic HP louvre systems were added for passive ventilation, supporting air quality and reducing energy demand in high-occupancy zones. The jury commended Williaam Cox for its skilful coordination and integration of complex façade requirements, including fire, blast, and structural performance. It was particularly impressed by the bespoke engineering solutions developed to maintain alignment, sightlines, and thermal integrity across vast glazed spans.
