50-60 Station Road, by Grimshaw and Dane Architectural Systems Holdings Ltd, is a landmark commercial and retail development located in the heart of Cambridge’s CB1 master plan. Designed by Grimshaw, the building is intended to both complement the master plan and reflect the wider city context. Sited within the Central Cambridge Conservation Area, the scheme is conceived as two independent forms – one of eight storeys and the other of seven storeys – connected via deeply recessed areas of floorplate.
The distinctive façade incorporates multiple elements, including vertical fins, horizontal brise-soleils, glass-reinforced concrete (GRC) cladding, Schüco FW 60+ curtain walling and Schüco ADS 70 doors.
The judges praised the project for its composition, innovative approach to façade design, and on-site execution.
