Aluminium or PVC-U?

The choice of material plays an important role in new windows, doors and sliding doors. Aluminium and PVC-U represent quality and reliability in equal measure. For this reason, the key question is not “Which material is better?”, but rather “Which material is best suited to my home, style and requirements?”

Materials that work with your home

Aluminium – elegant and robust

Aluminium is a great choice for elegant designs, large-scale glass surfaces
and a particularly high-quality appearance.

Benefits of aluminium

  • Very high level of stability – perfect for large window formats with narrow profile face widths
  • Excellent thermal insulation values thanks to thermal separation
  • High-quality, colour-stable and durable surface finishes
    Extremely weather-resistant
  • Ideal for challenging architecture and contemporary designs

PVC-U – efficient and versatile

PVC-U features outstanding thermal insulation, is low maintenance and offers flexible design options. An attractive price/performance ratio rounds off the benefits.

The benefits of PVC-U

  • Outstanding insulation values for energy-efficient living
  • Excellent price/performance ratio
  • Easy-care and durable
  • Wide range of designs, colours and surface finishes
  • Particularly suitable for traditional residential buildings

PVC-U and aluminium in combination

Externally, a stylish aluminium shell offers long-term protection against the weather and gives the house a high-quality appearance. Internally, PVC-U ensures optimal thermal insulation and cost-effective efficiency. These systems combine the design benefits of aluminium with the functional strengths of PVC-U.

A mix of materials in the home

One part of the windows, doors or sliding doors can be designed using PVC-U, while another can be designed with aluminium. This is particularly useful with very large glass surfaces using aluminium, while simultaneously prioritising energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Why sustainable construction begins with windows and doors

When building a house, many people start by thinking about insulation, heating systems or materials. However, sustainable and energy-efficient living starts with choosing the right windows and doors, and opting for durable materials that contain recycled content to reduce your carbon footprint.

The perfect balance of comfort and sustainability

Modern, well-insulated windows and doors ensure that the house stays warm in winter and does not unnecessarily heat rooms in summer. This reduces heating and cooling requirements, minimises energy consumption and increases living comfort for many years to come. Today sustainability begins long before the decision is made about a specific window or door. The materials determine how resource-efficient the product is and what carbon footprint it will leave from manufacture through to recycling – in other words, throughout its entire lifetime. This is why recycled materials make an important contribution to maintaining the value of a property in the long term without compromising on quality, stability or design.

Sustainable windows and doors from Schüco

Schüco goes another step further and also offers many windows and doors in Ultra Low Carbon (ULC) aluminium. This material is predominantly manufactured using recycled aluminium and significantly reduces the carbon footprint, including during production. Compared to conventional aluminium, this can reduce CO₂ emissions by up to around 72%.* Modern PVC-U profiles also follow this sustainable approach. They are collected, recycled and returned to the material cycle. This is how old windows and doors are turned into new profiles or other PVC-U products. Complete recyclability is evidenced by the VinylPlus® product label, which is the quality seal of the sustainability programme of the European PVC industry.

The benefits of recycled materials

Increasingly, modern windows and doors can be designed using recycled materials. As a result, design, comfort and material quality can be combined with an environmentally friendly approach.

  • Aluminium can be fully recycled an indefinite number of times, which is a huge advantage for sustainable construction
  • PVC-U from old frames can be recycled up to seven times, without any significant loss of quality
  • Less waste thanks to recycled materials
  • Significantly smaller environmental footprint
  • No compromises – the same stability, same appearance and same durability

FAQs

When does it make sense to combine PVC-U and aluminium?

An aluminium/PVC-U combination is a practical option if you want to bring together a high-quality look, good thermal insulation and cost-effective efficiency. On the outside, aluminium provides a robust, weather-resistant surface and a particularly high-quality appearance. At the same time, PVC-U offers good insulation properties, making it a cost-effective solution. A combination of materials can also be beneficial inside a house, particularly when different areas are to be designed differently. This holds true, for example, when large glass surfaces require particularly slim and sturdy frames, while energy efficiency and budget considerations take precedence in other areas.

Which material is best for windows and doors: aluminium or PVC-U?

The choice of material depends on various factors. The key considerations are the requirements the home needs to meet and the style that suits the house. Aluminium is particularly well suited to large glass surfaces, slim sightlines and a high-quality, modern look. PVC-U stands out above all for its excellent insulation properties, low-maintenance characteristics and attractive price/performance ratio. Both materials offer durable and reliable solutions for residential construction. Therefore, the right choice is not determined by a single principle, but by the interplay of architecture, comfort and budget.

How sustainable are aluminium and PVC-U windows and doors?

When it comes to windows and doors, sustainability starts first and foremost with durable materials and good energy performance. Aluminium can be recycled almost indefinitely, making it well-suited to a resource-conserving material cycle. PVC-U can also be recycled and reused multiple times without compromising its suitability for residential construction. At the same time, modern windows and doors help to reduce heat loss and lower energy consumption in everyday life. Sustainability therefore stems not only from the material itself, but also from its lifespan, recyclability and contribution to your home’s energy efficiency. It’s important to remember that the use of recycled materials does not mean you need to compromise on quality, stability or appearance.

Can the material, colour and design be configured individually?

Yes, you can individually tailor the material, colour and design to your building project. Windows, doors and sliding doors can be combined to suit your needs in terms of form, function, surface finish and technical specifications. This results in a solution that complements your home, your lifestyle and your personal requirements. This is important for both newbuilds and renovations, as design, comfort and technology are often closely interlinked.
