insulation

A sense of security

A cosy home is one where it feels cool in summer and snugly warm in winter.

Thermal insulation with Schüco Insulation

Comfortable living is truly noticeable in well-insulated homes. No draughts disturb you, and in summer the heat stays outside. Warm surfaces, pleasant temperatures and a stable indoor climate ensure that every room feels cosy. This creates a home with a high quality of living – all year round.

Everything you need to know about thermal insulation

Save costs, increase comfort

Well-insulated windows feel warm to the touch; radiant cold is reduced. Rooms become more comfortable without needing to turn up the heating. In this way, you can save on heating costs while enjoying a pleasant indoor climate.

No draughts

Sealed joints and modern gasket systems minimise airflow. This not only ensures a comfortable indoor climate, but also protects against moisture damage.

Less damp, less mould

Higher surface temperatures reduce damp, protect against mould and promote a healthy indoor climate. Modern thermal insulation is particularly worth it in old buildings. New, well-insulated windows can reduce heat loss by up to 80%.

Summer thermal insulation

Sun shading glazing and shading keep rooms at a comfortable temperature in hot weather. This promotes better concentration and a good night’s sleep – even without energy-intensive cooling. Your home stays at a comfortable temperature even on hot days, without harming the environment.

The U value makes it possible to measure the perfect indoor climate

Thermal insulation reduces the flow of heat between indoors and outdoors. The better the insulation, the more stable the indoor climate – and the smaller the energy requirement.

Good thermal insulation can be measured objectively. The thermal transmittance (U value) demonstrates how reliably building components keep the heat in or out.

This value is therefore a trusted reference point when selecting new windows and doors. The lower the U value, the more stable the room climate – and the smaller the energy requirement for heating and cooling.

Take advantage of subsidy schemes

In Germany, attractive state subsidy schemes are available for energy-efficient newbuilds, energy-efficient renovations and individual modernisation measures – such as the replacement of windows. Depending on the measure or efficiency standard, you can reduce your eligible costs by up to 20% and even more for newbuilds with repayment subsidies.

What level of thermal insulation is best for your home?

With Schüco, you can individually adapt thermal insulation to your requirements. In this regard, the U value describes how much heat is lost through windows, doors and sliding doors.

Basic

Windows and doors with reasonable thermal insulation achieve U values between > 1.1 and 1.3 W/(m²K). They therefore meet the current minimum legal standards for thermal insulation (GEG), making them a great choice for sustainable renovations and newbuilds.

Advanced

Products with excellent thermal insulation offer U values between > 0.95 and 1.1 W/(m²K), which significantly surpasses the legal requirements. These are perfect for energy-efficient renovations and newbuilds.

High

Windows and doors with outstanding thermal insulation achieve U values of ≤ 0.95 W/(m²K) and therefore meet the current funding requirements for programmes such as KfW or BAFA. Ideal for Passivhaus buildings, future-proof newbuilds and energy-efficient renovations.

Windows and doors make all the difference

Windows and doors play a central role in thermal insulation. They determine how much energy enters the building, remains inside or is lost. The effectiveness of the insulation depends on several factors, such as:

  • Glazing Triple insulating glass reduces heat loss significantly. The right g-value creates a balance between solar gains and heat protection.
  • Frame Highly insulated aluminium or PVC-U profiles with thermal break and multi-chamber geometry keep energy in the room – without compromising on stability or design.
  • Installation: Even the best windows are useless if they are not installed properly. Highly qualified Schüco partners provide you with reliable and expert support – from consultation through to installation.

FAQs

What do Uw, Ug and Uf mean and how are they connected?

Uw, Ug and Uf describe different thermal insulation aspects for a window. The U values are key indicators of the thermal transmittance. The Uw value represents the whole window and is therefore the most important value when it comes to everyday energy efficiency performance. The Ug value refers to the glass, and the Uf value to the frame. Only the interplay between these values shows how much heat is actually lost or remains in the building. The lower the value, the better the thermal insulation. When choosing new windows, it is therefore always worth looking at the unit as a whole rather than just individual values.

Is triple glazing always better than double glazing?

Triple glazing can reduce heat loss by a much greater amount and is therefore especially critical for high energy efficiency requirements. Whether it is the best solution, however, always depends on the building, the desired energy standard and the overall window system. Not only is the glazing key, but also the combination of frame, gasket and professional installation. For energy-efficiency newbuilds and renovations, triple glazing is often an outstanding choice as it noticeably improves thermal insulation, brings down heating costs and simultaneously provides soundproofing. At the same time, the solution always needs to suit the house and planned use. Good thermal insulation is therefore not a result of a single feature, but a coordinated overall system.

What role does the warm edge play?

In thermal insulation, the warm edge plays an important role in the overall energy performance of a window. It is a component on the edge of the glazing that ensures less heat is lost. This keeps the inside of the window warmer at the edge where it meets the frame, reducing the risk of condensation, damp and mould and protecting the building structure. At the same time, it makes the room more comfortable, as it reduces cold spots around the window and minimises the feeling of draughts.

Which type of insulation is best suited to windows?

The best insulation always results from the combination of glazing, frame and proper installation. Triple glazing significantly reduces heat loss and, together with highly insulated frame profiles, forms the basis for excellent energy-efficiency values. Aluminium and PVC-U systems can thereby achieve high levels of thermal insulation when they are selected to suit the building. Sealed joints and modern gasket systems are just as important for ensuring that there are no draughts and keeping the heat inside. If the requirements are particularly high, systems with very low U values come into play; they can also meet funding requirements. It is therefore not just the individual material that is key, but the right combination of all components.
