The luxury of silence

A home that keeps disruptive noises out brings inner peace

Sound reduction with Schüco Silence

The sound of traffic, the murmur of voices, incessant background noise – the world is loud and noise is our constant companion. This makes us long all the more for a place of retreat where we can switch off in peace. A home that protects us from noise, where we can sleep more deeply and think more clearly.

Acoustic comfort increases your well-being

Restful sleep

Even quiet noises can seriously disrupt our sleep, even if they don’t wake us up straight away. High-quality sound reduction ensures the peace and quiet we need – so that our sleep remains undisturbed, our bodies can recover and every morning begins with a sense of lightness.

Improved health

Continuous noise can raise blood pressure, weaken the immune system, increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and lead to chronic stress. Effective sound reduction creates an environment in which body and mind can find peace – for better health.

Stay focused

Sound reduction brings you peace and quiet, increases concentration and creates a relaxed atmosphere – for example, for working in your home office. After all, even moderate background noise – such as traffic noise over 40 decibels – can significantly impair performance.

Undisturbed private space

Our home is our sanctuary, a place where we want to be protected from unwanted noises from outside – be it traffic or your neighbours. We want to be the ones to decide on the background noise that surrounds us and does us good. Only then can we truly feel free.

Longing for a peaceful home

For many people in Germany, noise is a daily source of stress, even within their own homes: according to a representative survey by the German Environment Agency, 67% of respondents feel disturbed by road traffic in their neighbourhood, followed by aircraft (38%) and trains (23%) due to rail traffic.

But it is not just the traffic noise that is seen as a disruptive factor: for 58%, noise from the neighbouring area is the most significant source of noise pollution.

This makes it all the more important to create soundproofed spaces where you can switch off, recharge your batteries and enjoy life in peace.

Schallschutzklassen

The right level for your neighbourhood

The sound reduction index of windows and doors indicates how well they reduce the transmission of sound – or noise – from outside to inside. It is given in dB. The higher the value, the better the sound reduction.

For example, a window or door in sound reduction class 3 can reduce noise by around 35-39 dB. A 10 dB reduction in sound level is perceived by the human ear as a halving of the volume.

The location of your home will indicate the required sound reduction class.

What level of sound reduction is best for your home?

Schüco offers various feature options. This is because the louder the surroundings, the better the windows, doors and sliding doors must perform.

Basic

In very quite areas, a standard level of sound reduction is sufficient – equivalent to sound reduction class 1/2.

Advanced

If you live on a street with an average level of traffic, or near a main road, increased sound reduction is recommended – equivalent to sound reduction class 3/4.

High

If you live on a busy street or near a train line or airport, particularly high sound reduction is recommended – equivalent to sound reduction class 5/6.

Windows and doors make all the difference

Windows and doors play a central role in sound reduction for the entire building envelope. How well they block out outside noise depends on several factors, such as:

  • Glazing: High sound reduction values are achieved through multi-pane glazing – such as triple glazing. In addition, the thicker the glass and the larger the space between the panes, the higher the sound reduction.
  • Frame: Aluminium and PVC-U offer high stability. This material property plays a key role in sound reduction.
  • Installation: Even the best windows are useless if they are not installed properly. Highly qualified Schüco partners provide you with reliable and expert support – from consultation through to installation.

They key to the perfect home

People often underestimate just how much windows, doors and sliding doors influence their experience of their living space. They determine how much natural light enters a room, how we experience heat, fresh air and noise, how secure we feel, and how comfortable our daily lives are.

FAQs

What is the difference between sound reduction glazing and standard glazing?

The difference primarily lies in how much outside noise is reduced. Standard glazing offers a basic level of protection, while sound reduction glazing is often designed to keep the level of noise inside to a minimum. The key aspects here are the design of the glazing, the thickness of the panes and the distance between the panes. The better these components are matched, the higher the sound insulation. In terms of living comfort, this means more peace and quiet, greater privacy and noticeably improved acoustic comfort in everyday life. It is important to note that windows and doors play a central role in sound reduction for the entire building envelope.

Is funding available for sound reduction measures?

Sound reduction measures are eligible for funding when they are part of an energy-efficient renovation. This is the case, for example, when new windows will not only reduce the noise, but also improve the thermal insulation. The funding available in each individual case always depends on the project and the current funding criteria. The key thing to note here is whether the measures also meet the technical requirements of a subsidy programme. Assessing funding opportunities at an early stage helps to gauge them realistically. Is triple glazing better for sound reduction?

Triple glazing can offer sound reduction benefits, as multi-pane glass generally achieves high sound reduction values. However, the number of panes is not the only important aspect here. The thickness of the glass, distance between the panes and the overall design also influence how effectively noise is reduced. Triple glazing is therefore not always the best solution in every situation, but needs to suit the location of your home and match the desired sound reduction level. In quiet areas, basic protection is often enough, whereas in more congested areas, much more efficient solutions are advisable. The key factor is always how well the windows, doors and glazing, taken as a whole, are suited to the specific noise conditions.

How can you ensure sufficient ventilation despite using sound reduction components?

Good sound reduction and a sufficient supply of fresh air are not mutually exclusive. Schüco offers integrated ventilation solutions that support air exchange without letting noise inside. Acoustic protection and a pleasant indoor climate can therefore be combined when the window is closed. It is always important to plan the entire system properly, rather than focusing solely on individual windows, so that peace and quiet and fresh air can coexist perfectly in everyday life.
