Buildings are among the most long-lasting man-made products.

They determine how we will live and work for decades. That is why we are working every day, throughout the world, on becoming the leading provider of circular solutions and services for sustainable building envelopes.

Our understanding of sustainability

With sustainable products and manufacturing processes, we at Schüco help make cities more sustainable and inclusive as intended by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. We also align our business with the concept of planetary boundaries. These aim to define a safe operating space for humanity within the Earth system, ensuring its stability. Some of these ecological threshold values have already been exceeded – continuing as we are could therefore endanger our livelihoods and the basis of commercial activity. For us, there is therefore no alternative to sustainable action.

"By successively increasing the proportion of CO₂e-reduced materials in our window, door, and façade profiles, we are actively contributing to the decarbonisation of the construction industry."

Dr. Roman Kordtomeikel, Head of Group Sustainability

Our prioritised SDGs

SDG 8: Decent work and economic growth

As a company, we have a responsibility to all our employees to ensure decent working conditions. We are therefore committed to providing secure and fair employment (target 8.5) and ensuring the long-term health of our employees through occupational health and safety and by minimising risks (target 8.8). We also see sustainability as an opportunity for innovative business developments and want to supplement our core business with new products and services with a clear sustainability focus, so we can be successful for the long term (target 8.2).

SDG 10: Reduced inequalities

As a company, we have a huge platform from which we can fight inequality. We are working towards ensuring equal opportunities for our employees regardless of age, gender, disability, ethnicity, background, religion or other status. Protecting against discrimination and promoting an open, diverse corporate culture are extremely important to us (target 10.3). The five selected SDGs match our focus projects and help us to concentrate our commitment to sustainability.

SDG 11: Sustainable cities and communities

As part of the construction industry, we see it as our responsibility to make urbanisation more sustainable (sub-target 11.3) and to reduce the per capita environmental impact of cities (sub-target 11.6). We make a central contribution to this in our core business by reviewing and constantly optimising our products and services in terms of their contribution to sustainable new builds and renovations. Specifically, our system solutions increase the energy efficiency of buildings and support a method of construction that conserves resources.

SDG 12: Sustainable consumption and production

In the coming decades, the global consumption of finite resources will lead to the progressive scarcity of resources and will result in major challenges for the economy. Schüco is therefore making an active contribution to the efficient use of resources (sub-target 12.2) and the development of a circular economy (target 12.5). This is evidenced by our growing portfolio of circular Cradle to Cradle products and the development and expansion of the recycling division RE:CORE, with the aim of processing construction materials after the usage phase and feeding them back into the respective material cycle. Through our involvement with industry initiatives, we are also encouraging other companies to introduce sustainable processes and products and to include sustainability matters in their reporting (target 12.6).

SDG 13: Measures to protect the climate

Climate protection is one of the most important tasks of the global community and is firmly entrenched in our sustainability strategy with SDG 13. We want to implement effective measures to reduce our carbon emissions to net zero by 2040. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has verified that the absolute CO₂e savings intended to be achieved by this target are in line with the 1.5 degree aim of the Paris Agreement. By continually optimising the use of energy during the manufacturing and usage phase, our products contribute towards the achievement of global climate protection targets. They also improve the ability to adapt to climate-related changes (target 13.1). Furthermore, we promote awareness of the consequences of climate change by supporting initiatives with a focus on sustainability (target 13.3).

We develop sustainable and future-proof solutions for buildings and beyond. Our goal is to enable a good quality of life for generations to come. We take a holistic view of sustainability—one that goes far beyond climate and environmental protection. For us, sustainable action is the key to a good life for everyone. Our approach is science-based, ambitious and encompasses the entire value chain. To achieve this goal, we focus on four key areas: climate protection and adaptation, environmental and resource protection, nature conservation, and social and corporate responsibility. Our expertise, our commitment to quality and our passion for outstanding buildings drive us to take sustainable construction into a new dimension – resilient, innovative and forward-looking.

Climate protection and adaptation

We are consistently reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across the entire value chain and designing our services and products to be future-oriented and resilient throughout their entire life cycle.

To this end, we have set a science-based climate protection target and will achieve net-zero emissions across all scopes by 2040. By 2030, we will have reduced our emissions by 50% compared to the base year of 2019 and will have completely switched our global electricity procurement to green power.

We are addressing the largest emission drivers in our GHG inventory with a clear focus: the targeted strengthening of circular and digital business models and products.

Environmental and resource protection

Through a consistent circular economy approach, we are focusing on circular materials, minimize waste and maximize reusability. In doing so, we place particular emphasis on responsible material sourcing and the consistent closure of material cycles. By increasing the recycled content and recyclability of our products and materials, and by expanding our portfolio to include circular service offerings such as dismantling, take-back and reuse, we are creating solutions for an even more effective circular economy.

Nature conservation

We operate within planetary boundaries and structure our value creation in such a way that it actively contributes to an environmentally friendly world. We are driving holistic change in our own operations and among our partners, and are contributing to a nature-friendly future by strengthening freshwater resources and promoting biodiversity within our own value chain and beyond.

Social and corporate responsibility

We are shaping a future in which economic success is inextricably linked to social fairness, environmental responsibility and the protection of human rights. As a global company, we set standards for a values-driven economy that is in harmony with people and the environment. Our employees play a crucial role in this – their ideas, their development and their contributions shape the future. And because this applies not only to the employees within our company, we act transparently and drive sustainable transformation throughout our entire value chain.

Sustainability in the business model

Our guiding principle: Every day, we work globally to be the leading provider of circular solutions and services for sustainable building envelopes. This is an integral part of our 2030 corporate strategy. To achieve this, we are expanding our portfolio to include holistic product, service and digital innovations for the entire life cycle of buildings. Our aim is to maximize the benefits for our customers. We are convinced that the environmental aspects of sustainability, and circular solutions in particular, must be an integral part of our value proposition.

Beyond climate and resource protection, the social dimension of sstainability plays a central role for us: we take a clear stand against all forms of discrimination and treat our employees fairly, regardless of gender, age, religion or cultural identity, while opening up individual career paths for them.

We are also committed to social issues outside our company, particularly the protection of labour and human rights throughout the supply chain.
