Prefabricated parts for flexibility

The apartment block was built using a serial production and construction method normally used for industrial buildings

Wohnregal, an apartment block in Moabit, Berlin, was constructed using prefabricated, exposed concrete systems which are typically used for industrial buildings such as warehouses. This method is economical and speeds up construction, helping the architects to combat rising construction costs in the industry. The project also keeps the future in mind. In the event of deconstruction, the components can be cleanly separated and recycled or disposed of.

Flexible floor plans

In contrast to the assumption that serial construction automatically implies standardised living units, Wohnregal offers maximum flexibility in terms of space to suit an ever-growing range of urban lifestyles. The living spaces can be easily adapted in the future should the usage requirements change. The wide-spanning TT beams stretching between the façades of the prefabricated concrete construction eliminate the need for load-bearing walls inside. The result is affordable living spaces ranging in size from 37 to 110 m2, each with its own individual floor plan.

A clear view

The windows, floor-to-ceiling lift-and-slide units, are standardised and mounted in front of the structure as curtain walls on the long sides of the building facing the street and the courtyard. In the summer months, this allows the indoor area to be opened up to its surroundings, transforming the entire living space into a spacious loggia. When closed, the thermally insulated Schüco sliding system with its narrow face widths ensures rooms flooded with light.
