Lighthouse in Amsterdam

Renovation with a new extension

On the former Telegraaf site in Amsterdam, the Lighthouse is the first building block in the development of a new neighbourhood. Within this framework, the existing high-rise building will be upgraded to a significantly more sustainable version and expanded into an office building with 13,000 m² of floor space. The design from Benthem Crouwel Architects focuses on clear, contemporary architecture.

Sustainability as a key concept

The entire main load-bearing structure of the extension is made of wood. The use of dry joints means that the building can be dismantled and thus reused in a circular way. For the design of the façades, an extension concept was chosen that combines black anodised aluminium profiles with wooden units. Large openings in the façade provide plenty of daylight. Efficient floor plans based on the existing building structure offer maximum flexibility for the users.
