Ícaro Jardins do Graciosa

Experiencing nature in an urban setting

In Curitiba, the capital of the southern Brazilian state of Paraná, three extraordinary, LEED-certified residential towers are drawing plenty of attention. A green space concept with planters on every floor creates a vertical garden within the densely populated city, helping to improve indoor air quality and the well-being of the residents.

Privacy in spite of transparency

A key objective for the architects at Studio Arthur Casas was to design three residential towers in a limited space according to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) principles, while optimising natural light without one building casting shadows over another. Achieving this required a number of studies during the development process. Visual contact between apartments also had to be avoided to protect the privacy of the residents. The iF Design Award 2021 recognises that the architects successfully achieved this delicate balance across the three buildings, which together comprise a total of 21 luxury apartments. Concrete was chosen for its visual strength, while timber and glass create an organic and transparent aesthetic.

Panorama Design sliding doors for flowing transitions

Both the integrated natural features of the building and the non-insulated Panorama Design sliding systems blur the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor spaces. Floor-to-ceiling glazing creates visually fluid transitions to the vertical gardens and offers unobstructed views outside. The remaining windows, doors and skylights are equally discreet and clearly arranged, providing naturally lit, comfortable living spaces in the heart of the city.
