Circular economy in the construction industry

The Green Deal is changing the rules of the construction and property industry. The carbon footprint is becoming a key criteria for future investments. An important factor in the reduction of carbon emissions is the use of recycled materials, which are becoming the norm in the construction industry. Schüco already supports you on your journey towards circular construction industry – with systems in aluminium, steel and PVC-U.

Cradle_to_Cradle

Cradle to Cradle as standard

Schüco window and façade systems have been designed in accordance with the principles of the circular economy since as early as 2014. The Cradle to Cradle (C2C) systems already meet the standards of the future. This certification confirms that all of the requirements stipulated by the EU with regard to the circular economy, reductions in carbon emissions and the conservation of resources are met. The major certification systems BREEAM, DGNB and LEED are also all based on these. With 60 systems certified in Silver and 15 in Bronze, Schüco is a pioneer in implementing the C2C principle in the construction and property industry. When it comes to property investments, it is therefore essential for investors to have a partner that uses sustainable materials and ecological construction methods in order to comply with the regulations.

Closed material cycles

Schüco has been consistently investing in material cycles for a long time. With the joint venture RE:CORE, for example, it provides a PVC recycling service, which handles everything from dismantling through to reuse. As a founding member of the A|U|F recycling initiative, Schüco guarantees the responsible recycling of disused aluminium window and façade profiles. With Schüco products and services, buildings are therefore becoming the raw material reserves of the future – and comply with all the relevant requirements of the circular economy.

Certified systems

Many PVC systems carry the VinylPlus seal and a further 75 aluminium products are Cradle to Cradle certified. Both materials are highly recyclable - sustainable for construction projects and value-enhancing for investors.

Bio-attributed PVC

PVC-U profiles from Schüco are also available in bio-attributed PVC-U, which replaces fossil oil with tall oil - a sustainable material that makes building projects more environmentally friendly and future-proof.

Rethinking the material cycle

The RE:CORE programme combines innovative recycling technologies with strategic partnerships such as REMONDIS to promote sustainable construction methods and significantly reduce the need for primary materials.

Schüco IoF

Digital building maintenance

With the IoF ID from Schüco, investors receive a comprehensive range of benefits. Every window, door and façade is given a unique digital ID. This enables the seamless tracking and efficient administration of all building units. All of the relevant data, information and service notifications are available in the cloud at all times. This reduces maintenance costs, increases transparency and improves the long-term value retention of investments.

“The building sector accounts for around half of material consumption worldwide. We should use this fact as an opportunity to innovate and drive forward the development of products that are truly recyclable.”

Professor Michael Braungart, co-founder of the “Cradle to Cradle” design concept.
