Schüco OneLab – your accredited test laboratory for IP protection rating tests in accordance with DIN EN 60529 (VDE 0470-1)

The Schüco OneLab Technology Center is your reliable partner for IP protection rating tests in accordance with DIN EN 60529 (VDE 0470-1). As a DAkkS accredited test laboratory in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025, we meet the highest standards in quality and offer precise results for your products that can be reproduced. When it comes to proof of IP protection rating tests against dust and water, you can rely on our expertise.

What are IP protection ratings?

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define the level of protection of a housing against the ingress of foreign bodies like dust, test probes and water. The classification is designated by two reference numbers (e.g. IP67), which describe the level of protection against contact, particles and moisture.

This test is especially important for manufacturers of electrical and electronic devices, assemblies or components that are used in challenging environments.

IP Schutzartprüfung für Staubschutz

What do the two numbers in the IP code mean?

The IP (Ingress Protection) code is made up of two numbers and describes the level of protection of a housing against external influences:

A test engineer prepares an IP protection rating test for dust protection

First number: protection against solid foreign bodies
IP Schutzartprüfung für Spritzwasserschutz

First number: protection against solid foreign bodies

This number (1-6) shows how well the housing is protected against the ingress of solid objects, such as dust, or contact from dangerous components.

Example:

  • IP1X – protection against large foreign bodies (e.g. ___)
  • IP5X – protection against dust in harmful quantities
  • IP6X – comprehensive dust protection (dust-proof)

A test engineer prepares an IP protection test for protection from water splashing

Second number: protection against water

Second number: protection against water

This number (1-9) describes the level of protection against the ingress of water, from dripping water to high pressure or steam blasts.

Example:

  • IPX2 – protection against dripping water
  • IPX4 – protection against water splashing on all sides
  • IPX7 – protection when temporarily submerged in water

Therefore, a product with a label of IP67 is dust-proof (rating of 6) and protected when temporarily submerged in water (rating of 7). The higher the numbers, the higher the level of protection. Common combinations for the numbers include IP21, IP54 or IP65, for example.

IP protection rating tests as decisive proof of quality

A standard IP protection test is far more than just a formal requirement. It is a central building block for product security and long-term reliability of electrical devices. In the absence of thorough testing, there is a risk that products may break down when put into practice – due to water ingress, dust or humidity. Such weaknesses often remain undetected during the development process, but can result in expensive malfunctions, complaints or even product recall when put in the field. The financial repercussions of insufficient weathertightness can be substantial.

A professional protection rating test in the Schüco OneLab protects you against such risks, documents the resistance of your products and gives you a distinct competitive advantage. If you cut corners here, you end up paying more in the long-run. Invest in tested safety for the housing of your products, to protect against direct contact and the entry of dangerous components, dust, water and other foreign bodies. Avoid expensive follow-up remedial work or liability issues.

Our modern test facilities allow realistic testing that complies with your requirements in conditions that can be reproduced – from dust chambers to water jet machines. We are transparent and conform to standards in our work at all times.
