Kindergarden Haimhauserstraße

Transformation of a kindergarten

The children's day care centre in the Old Schwabing district of Munich has been re-designed. Inside the original listed building is a care facility that complies with modern standards and was transformed using slimline steel systems. Joining the extension to the existing building with a fully glazed section has created a single ensemble, which preserves the architectural history and provides new spaces for the children.

General renovation and extension

In the heart of the Old Schwabing district in Munich, a building dating back to 1875 has been given a new lease of life.

Originally built to be a school, it has most recently been used as a children's day care centre by the state capital of Munich. When a general renovation became necessary as a result of structural damage, the plan was to extend the building at the same time to comply with the latest requirements for a day-care centre. The proposal from Munich-based architectural practice Braun Architekten to extend the existing building onto the neighbouring vacant plot was approved by the listed building authorities, as this meant that any changes to the fabric of the original building could be kept to a minimum.

Slimline steel solutions to meet modern standards

The renovation had to meet current standards for a listed building. The dimensions, proportions, structure and details of the extension are in keeping with the historic existing building, including the windows with slimline turn/tilt vents that were fabricated using the Janisol Arte 66 profile system from Schüco Jansen Steel Systems. Janisol Arte 66 allows for the turn/tilt opening type, even with the special narrow frame requirements of listed buildings. However, as the width of the vents in the double-vent windows was well below the required minimum dimensions, special fittings were used to make them. The result is impressive. "Despite the narrow proportions, the turn/tilt opening works perfectly," confirms Ulrich Schimtenings, Project Manager at Braun Architekten.

More room for development

Since reopening in autumn 2023, the four groups of children have not only been able to enjoy renovated facilities but, thanks to the extension, they now also have both group and multi-purpose rooms that they had previously been missing. Additionally, there is a quiet and protected inner courtyard that functions as a secure outdoor play area.
