Built from the earth

With its glittering lakes, rocky shores and vast pine forests, the Canadian province of Ontario is known for its unspoiled nature. In the middle of this green environment is a house on a narrow, wooded stretch of land which separates a lake from a wetland. Trevor Mcavoi Architects named their building the Rammed Earth Cottage. Why is this? Well, before construction began a large, rammed earth wall was built along the entire stretch. This was necessary in order to be able to erect the building easily in such an exposed location.

Large dimensions

The main idea behind the design was to construct a building that, on one side, opens discreetly and subtly to the wetland to provide privacy for the rooms. And on the other side, there are large, light openings over the lakes which give fantastic views of the water. The Schüco FWS 50 SG façade system takes care of this with its large, all-glass façades which have double insulating glass for good thermal insulation. The highly stable ADS 75 HD.HI door system is also specially designed for heavy and oversized door leaves with large opening widths. The Classic Design sliding doors that were installed ensure the perfect view to the outside when open and, thanks to the narrow profile face widths, even when closed.
