Prefabricated apartment block construction

The “Wohnregal” in Moabit, Berlin, is a remarkable example of modern apartment block construction. By using a pre-cast exposed concrete system, the project breaks with traditional construction techniques and paves the way for new architectural possibilities. The principle of flexibility is implemented consistently here in the design and use of the living spaces.

An inconspicuous but special building

At first glance, the Wohnregal discreetly blends in with the ribbon and perimeter block developments typical of Berlin residential districts. However, upon closer inspection, the special construction method is revealed: the use of pre-cast exposed concrete units breaks with conventional residential construction methods and creates clean, minimalist architecture.

Maximum flexibility due to pre-cast units

The building offers rental apartments with an area of between 37 and 110 m2 on six storeys. The use of a pre-cast system means that the supports and beams and their joints are all open and visible. The floor-to-ceiling lift-and-slide window units and the curtain wall create spaces with no supports, thereby providing maximum flexibility for the design of the rooms. The open structure provides the freedom to adapt the apartments to individual needs and future requirements.

Efficiency and variety in the architecture

The concept of the “Wohnregal” (or “housing rack” in English) combines efficiency with variety. The residential spaces differ from standard modern apartments, opening up new architectural possibilites. The systematic approach and the “rack” principle create a flexible basic framework, which permits different apartment designs without the need for a universal system.

New aesthetic and serial construction method

The expression and the aesthetic of serial construction has also been reinterpreted. The greater tolerances within the building unit joints create open spaces that allow sunlight to flood the interior. The concrete components, which weigh several tonnes, appear to be detached from each other and look as if they are floating.
