Hytte Nordmarka

An inspiring window solution

By combining simple construction, a minimal ecological footprint and a technically and aesthetically outstanding window solution, the Hytte Nordmarka is making a statement that architecture does not always need to be monumental to have a significant impact.

Minimalist architecture

With an area of almost 30 m², this compact cabin blends into its rocky surroundings almost completely – yet it is anything but nondescript. The reticent architecture reflects a specific focus on the essentials, both functionally and ecologically: the simple foundation, which is directly anchored in the rocks using bolts, minimises its impact on nature and emphasises the lightness of the structure.

Façade for an open design

At the heart of the architectural concept is a generous southwest-facing window, fulfilling the client’s desire for unobstructed views of the surrounding landscape. On recommendation from fabricator Ole Sæland von Farstad Aluminium, the highly thermally insulated Schüco FWS 50.HI façade was chosen. This mullion/transom system impresses not only with its excellent thermal properties, but also its open design and technical precision. With the help of detailed drawings and 3D models, it was possible to efficiently integrate the complex corner solution into the digital model and optimise it during the planning process.

Structural sophistication

One of the greatest challenges was the glass corner that appears to float without any visible supports. The structural load is absorbed by a cleverly concealed, slanted steel column in the outer bank, which blends in seamlessly with the building’s distinctive wall. The result is almost frameless transparency where the room seems to melt away and the boundary between the indoor and outdoor spaces disappears.
