Retro aesthetic with modern systems

Retro aesthetic with modern systems

Surrounded by white plastered houses, this four-storey home in the southern Chinese coastal city of Shantou stands out with its red brick façade. In a complex renovation project, the old envelope of the building was torn down and a new one built from scratch. The result was this generously-proportioned house which, with its retro style and approx. 70,000 carefully selected bricks, attracts all the attention. The design is based on the client's desire for simplicity and a touch of antique charm.

Despite its nostalgic aesthetic, the building envelope has been fitted with ultra-modern Schüco systems, which focus on design, comfort and functionality. Instead of being made out of wood as they would have been traditionally, the window, door, and Folding Design sliding door systems installed were made from aluminium, which not only ensures an attractive appearance, it also provides optimum protection against humidity – a key issue with the coastal location of the house. The Schüco AWS 65 window system used is Cradle to Cradle certified and therefore counts towards the sustainability of the building envelope.
