The Europäisches Hansemuseum is Europe's largest museum dedicated to the history of the Hanseatic League. It blends in harmoniously with the historical context of the old town of Lübeck, which is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to the new museum building, which is nestled into the Castle Hill, the plot comprises the Castle Friary and outside areas which are publicly accessible. With a mixture of handcrafted materials and a contemporary architectural language, the new museum building forms a link between the past and the present. Traditional building materials – clinker bricks and structural bronze – characterise the façades. To achieve the look desired by the architects, highly thermally insulated steel profiles from Schüco Jansen Steel Systems (Janisol and VISS Linea), which have been clad with thin sheets of structural bronze, form the core of the window and door constructions.
Hamburg-based practice Andreas Heller Architects & Designers won Gold in the "Architecture – Public" category of the iF Design Award 2016, the RIBA Award for International Excellence 2016 and the renowned DAM Award for Architecture in Germany 2017 for their sensitive incorporation of contemporary architecture into the historic old town of Lübeck and the architectural design.
