Object description

The Fritz Bender Foundation has three main aims: it promotes medical research on immune system diseases, awards a prize for organic architecture each year, and supports needy and ill construction workers and their families. The foundation has its headquarters on Schleißheimer Strasse in the north of Munich. In 2010, the new “bender campus” office building was added to the buildings on the company’s grounds. The office building consists of two half structures which are divided by a firewall and turned 180 degrees towards each other. Each part has its own core with a staircase, elevator, mechanical service room, and adjoining rooms. “bender campus” can be accessed via both sides. Customers enter the complex from Schleißheimer Strasse and employees via Schätzweg. The ground floor contains the reception area, a showroom, and the cafeteria, the upper floors accommodate offices and the second and third floors house large conference areas. The building complex culminates in a flat roof with extensive greenery. The Schüco façade of “bender campus” is a mullion and transom construction executed in aluminum. A composite thermal insulation system is used on the first through third floors, and corrugated aluminum sheeting serves as infill units on the ground floor. Iso screen blinds in front of the conference rooms have myriad functions – light control, shading, and solar shading. The other rooms are shaded by hidden external blinds. In the project, architect Thomas Heckel attached great importance to sustainability and an energy-saving supply concept. Only the entrance halls needs air conditioning; all other rooms can be cooled and heated by means of concrete core activation.
