01 PROFILE: If you hadn’t become an architect, what would you have been?
Patrik Schumacher: A philosopher. I studied philosophy as well, but after I had to interrupt my studies to do my civilian alternative to military service, I didn’t want to gather dust in the library. With architecture, I then discovered the political and economics philosophy for me. It still plays a big role in my work today as an architect and architecture theoretician.
02 PROFILE: : What are your sources of inspiration?
Patrik Schumacher: As well as modern role models, it’s the historical understanding of how and in what direction our society is developing. What political course needs to be set? At the moment we’ve relapsed into a retro phase. The reinvention of humanity is sadly happening much too slowly for me, but I want to be a part of it.
03 PROFILE: Who would you like to swap places with for a day?
Patrik Schumacher: Emmanuel Macron or Sebastian Kurz. I fi nd it fascinating that political careers like theirs are possible in today’s media world. I would fi nd it exciting to have a position of great political responsibility for a day, as well as the infl uence and curiosity of a job like that.
