Planning and construction are becoming ever more polarised: design freedom through technical possibilities on the one hand and enormous economic pressures, material, resource, and energy efficiency on the other. The challenge for architects and planners, is to combine both aspects in a positive way and thereby create an architecture in which these polarised arguments do not contradict each other.

Digitisation and parametrics – computer-aided design

The start-to-finish digitisation of architectural processes is no longer a vision of the future. In fact the use of CAD (Computer Aided Design) and BIM (Building Information Modelling) are more often than not the basis for architectural design and construction processes. What is new however, is the impact that new digital processes are having on creative design, covered by the term “Parametric Design”.
Parametric design refers to an unbroken digital process chain that covers all aspects of construction, verified and optimised for interdependency. In this mathematical digital process, optimal form generation is integrated just as well as structural analysis, spatial organisation, materials or energy balance. When a parameter in the digital system changes, it affects the entire project. As a result, complicated free forms, splines, or forms inspired by bionics are made possible.

Industrialisation and individualisation - computer-aided manufacturing

What at first sounds like an antithesis, is in fact a formative driving force of our current time, and according to forecasts, the future of Western societies: Industrialisation and individualisation. Industrialisation in the sense of pre-fabrication, automation, mass production and a trouble-free working life. Individualisation in terms of maximum freedom and opportunity for development, experience and self realisation and products that are custom-made to the needs of the individual. In everyday life, there is a mixture of both. Likewise, on the construction site. With the help of computer-aided design, the prefabrication of custom-made modules based on system elements will make safe and economical construction possible, despite unlimited design freedom.
