»Feeding the planet, energy for life« – 145 countries are presenting themselves under this motto at Expo 2015 in Milan. In accordance with the principles of the world exposition, the national pavilions deal with the topics of energy efficiency and sustainability. Ten structures were built with Schüco involvement.


Expo Gate
Directly in front of the Castello Sforzesco in Milan city centre stands the so-called Expo Gate, which was designed by Scandurra Studio. From their location just outside the exposition site, two glass pavilions set the tone for this major event with their lightweight construction and truncated
cone shape.

Palazzo Italia
This is the symbolic »heart« of the Expo and marks the northern main entrance of the Expo site. Here, Nemesi & Partners designed a pavilion organised around a piazza consisting of four main areas (exhibition area, auditorium, events and meeting rooms) connected to one another by bridges. A slender network of façade units branches out like a tree, rising from four solid pillars and allowing views inside the building.

Vietnam Pavilion
The lotus flower, a symbol of purity and optimism, is Vietnam’s national flower and served as the main inspiration to the architect Vo Trong Nghia for the Vietnamese Expo pavilion. Situated in front of the building is an expanse of water adorned with huge lotus flowers made of bamboo, which is intended to show the international community the country's commitment to active environmental and in particular water protection measures.

Russian Pavilion
Traditional wooden architecture was the source of inspiration here for the architects from Speech.The distinctive feature of the timber-clad pavilion is the canopy which projects 30 metres over the main entrance and is visible from afar.

Other Expo buildings
The service buildings, the USA pavilion, the FIAT New Holland pavilion, the Moldovan pavilion, the Kuwait pavilion and the United Arab Emirates pavilion were all built with Schüco involvement.

The USA pavilion has been designed as an homage to the agricultural tradition of the country: The architect James Biber interprets the building as an open structure.
The entrance of the Russian pavilion with cantilevered canopy that curves upwards. The large glass areas were created using the Schüco AOC ST systems as an add-on construction on steel.
The 12 metre-high walls of the entrance to the Norman Foster-designed pavilion of the United Arab Emirates are resemblant of sand dunes.


Since the 18th Century, the magnificent Baroque Basilica of Ottobeuren has sat enthroned above the town. The landmark is considered an attractive destination for visitors. In its immediate vicinity, the Stuttgart practice Atelier Lohrer has created a modern architectural highlight in the Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst – Diether Kunerth (museum for contemporary art – Diether Kunerth).


The museum, with its gold and bronzecoloured façade, is slightly hidden behind the buildings situated directly on the central marketplace but is a worthwhile discovery. From an urban development perspective, this is nothing short of a coup. The architect transformed the unused site of a former brewery into a new museum building with a sculpture yard, which creates urban connecting passages. The project, which was co-financed through EU funds and the municipality, represents an extraordinary enhancement of the entire area. The museum building has a reduced design throughout. Its most eyecatching feature is the façade, which shimmers in golden hues. Here, vertical aluminium bars installed close together serve as external solar shading. The remaining façades – largely built on the original foundations of the brewery building – have a plain, white rendered appearance. Two gold-coloured, exposed display windows allow early views of the exhibits from outside. Inside, the museum offers ample space on two levels to stage the large-format paintings and sculptures of the artist. In addition, a large, versatile multi-purpose space and rooms for museum-related learning are available to the municipality. All of the windows for the newbuild feature the Schüco AWS 75 window system. Architect Fabian Lohrer explains his choice: »We needed a slimline profile which corresponds to the minimalist design approach. Outside, the burglar-resistant profiles with fixed glazing are consciously subordinated to the plain design, while inside they are almost completely concealed by white varnished MDF.« With this museum, Diether Kunerth, an artist who was previously little known outside Germany, is already enjoying a high level of appreciation for his art during his lifetime.

The museum offers generous rooms to stage the paintings and sculptures of the artist Diether Kunerth. A continuous ribbon window on the north façade allows plenty of daylight to penetrate.
