Object description

The Audi Center in Munich is located on the corner of Albrechtstrasse and Leonrodstrasse in Neuhausen, an upscale residential district of the Munich. It was the first construction project in Germany to be conceived based on Audi’s corporate architecture guidelines – dynamics, asymmetry, and transparency. The “terminal style” concept, which was developed by the Allmann Sattler Wappner architectural office and relies on exclusive, progressive, and design-oriented building, has already been implemented internationally at Audi branches in Frankfurt, Tokyo, and Sydney, among others places. The central spaces of the building are the spacious showrooms, which rise two stories and which are connected with one another by a freestanding escalator. The dynamism of Audi cars is transferred to the building, expressed by asymmetric curved segments which are meant to simulate a street frontage. Automobiles are presented between a dark curved floor and a bright curved ceiling. The dark-gray floor arcs upwards, becoming part of the wall. The white shell of the ceiling curves downwards in a big arc and also merges with the wall. The functional areas (care, offices, and shop) are also arranged across both stories. They are visually divided from the showrooms but connected with them via openings in the curved wall. The curved profiles of the interior contrast with the rigid orthogonal body of the building. Large display windows create a transparent link to the city – and to potential customers. The façade, with its beveled show room windows and large-scale cladding of perforated, corrugated aluminum sheeting, gives the building a strong presence and, due to its expressiveness, ensures that the Audi Center, despite its simple basic form, has an unmistakable identity in the urban space.
