1951 The birth of Schüco
Heinz Schürmann, a pioneer in the young Federal Republic of Germany, founds the company Heinz Schürmann & Co. in Porta Westfalica. In a small backyard with six employees, he produces shop windows, awnings and rolling grilles.
New home During the West German economic miracle, innovative windows and façades become more and more important. Schüco supplies them. The company is at the forefront of progress using light and modern aluminium. By moving to Bielefeld in 1954, Schüco finds a new home.
Crossing borders The rapid growth of Schüco requires new distribution channels. Commercial branches are established in Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Hamburg. Licence agreements and agency contracts enable new cooperation across Europe. In 1958, Schüco enters into a partnership with AluKönigStahl that still endures today.
Market innovation “Allwetter”, the first major system development for sliding doors and windows, conquers the market in 1963 with a new gasket system.
Ascending together Schüco presses ahead with international expansion. In 1964, subsidiaries are set up in France, the Netherlands and Denmark. Schüco Design (now Schüco Alu Competence) is established in Borgholzhausen in the same year.
Strong basis In 1966, Schüco presents the “Alldoor” system, the first all-aluminium door developed in-house. It remains the basis for all subsequent door systems.
A strong connection – to the present day The sale of Schüco to technology company OTTO FUCHS KG in 1964 opens up new economic and technological horizons. Schüco founder Heinz Schürmann hands over management of the company to Dr.-Ing. Ernst von Wedel.
1970s A system-based approach
Schüco develops into a system supplier for aluminium windows, doors and façades. The company establishes new sites across Germany, continually expanding its sales network.
Ahead of the times Aluminium windows, doors and façades, as well as large sliding systems with outstanding thermal insulation: two years before the oil crisis in 1973, Schüco is already focusing on climate protection and conserving resources with innovative products.
Everything from a single source Schüco showcases its wide range of products at the 1972 BAU exhibition in Munich: Aluminium windows, doors and façades, as well as wall cladding, roofing, sun shading and much more.
The customer is king Service becomes ever more important. Here too, Schüco is a pioneer. Schüco Service GmbH is founded as a fully-owned subsidiary with three employees in 1972. The company provides software to help its metal fabrication customers with calculations and construction.
A change in leadership Günter Reinecke takes over as Managing Partner of the company in 1975.
New trade routes Schüco also experiences growth outside Germany, and at the Aluminium ’75 exhibition in Moscow it paves the way for exports to eastern Europe.
Engineering ingenuity At Constructa 1977 in Hanover, Schüco wows exhibition visitors with the new “Royal” system, the premium product in terms of thermal insulation for windows and doors. The CAD system for digital design is launched two years later.
1980s A global player with new material
Schüco becomes increasingly international, with licensees in Europe. The company quickly recognises the potential of versatile PVC-U and adds PVC-U windows to its product range.
Right on track The Schüco Express has been rolling through West Germany since the early 1980s. Inside the carriages, customers can marvel at the latest window and façade technology – a unique form of product presentation.
Anniversary Schüco celebrates 30 years of its existence with a party for staff, many partners and honoured guests in a large marquee in Bielefeld.
Fuelling innovation Schüco has been meeting noise protection and environmental protection requirements successfully for years. In 1982 the company also sets standards for security with the first approved fire protection system, “T-30-1”.
Market launch Schüco presents the new “Iskotherm” aluminium window system. The thermally insulated profiles are used in residential construction and renovations in particular.
New material In 1985 Schüco enters the systems business for PVC-U windows.
Passion for football Schüco places perimeter advertising in German stadiums for the first time in 1984. The footballing heart lies in East-Westphalia: the 1988/89 season sees the Schüco name advertised on DSC Arminia Bielefeld shirts. In 2004 the stadium itself also gets a new name, demonstrating its link to the systems provider as the SchücoArena.
1990s A turning point
After the fall of the Berlin Wall, building renovation with ecofriendly building materials in East Germany and eastern Europe presents a major challenge. Schüco seizes this opportunity and expands its business further. At the same time, the company enters the solar market and targets large commercial projects.
Historic result In 1990, thanks to the construction boom in the east of Germany, Schüco turnover crosses the magical 1 billion deutschmark threshold for the first time. Fittingly, German football legend Franz Beckenbauer becomes a brand ambassador.
Aiming high A new high-rise cassette warehouse in Bielefeld provides 22,000 storage areas across 81,000 m2.
Unified Schüco presents “Royal S”, the new composite technology for window and door systems. The system, developed on the basis of its predecessors “Royal” and “Iskotherm”, is also used at the company’s own site for the block windows in the extension.
Construction in the east In Weißenfels (Saxony-Anhalt), Schüco begins building one of the most modern extrusion plants for PVC-U profiles in Europe. The company backs the new eastern states of Germany in sport too: Franziska van Almsick becomes the new face of Schüco.
Succession For only the third time in the company’s history stretching back 45 years, there is a change at the top of Schüco. In 1997, Dirk U. Hindrichs succeeds Günter Reinecke.
Petrol in the blood In 1998, Schüco joins Formula 1. Sporting the Schüco sponsor logo, the McLaren-Mercedes car dominates the pinnacle of motorsports worldwide.
Strong cooperation A combined steel company is created in 1999 under the name Schüco Jansen Steel Systems.
Inexhaustible source of energy Schüco adds a third business division to its product portfolio with solar thermal and photovoltaic products in 1999.
2000s Growing together and conserving resources
Schüco identifies the opportunities of globalization and extends its business into the USA, South America and China. With its three divisions Metal, PVC-U and Solar, the company is a specialist in sustainable solutions for the entire building envelope.
Ultra-high performance In 2005, the Schüco Technology Center is accredited as an independent and certified test institute for the building envelope.
Aluminium innovation The window and door system “Schüco AWS/ADS” sets new standards in 2007 and replaces the renowned “Royal S” system.
Sport in the spotlight Schüco commits to golf in 2008. It is an ideal match: precision and perfection in harmony with nature and technology. One year later, the inaugural Schüco Open golf tournament is held featuring numerous international golf stars.
Sharing knowledge The Schüco Competence Center at the Bielefeld headquarters is opened in 2007, deepening the specialist knowledge of employees and partners. The training in the customer workshop is especially practical: fabrication of Schüco systems and how to use Schüco machines are taught here.
Temperature control Schüco presents the 2° Concept for the building envelope in 2009. With pioneering, energyefficient technology, the company takes a meaningful approach to restricting global warming to 2 degrees.
2010s Fit for the future
With innovative products and digital solutions, Schüco positions itself as the technology and service leader in the industry. Strategic construction investments in the millions create new working environments. In every activity, sustainability is at the forefront: it is not a trend for Schüco, it is an attitude.
Team spirit and trust Dr.-Ing. Hinrich Mählmann takes over at Schüco International KG in June 2012, becoming Managing Partner of both Schüco and the parent company OTTO FUCHS KG.
Focus On 1 October 2012, Andreas Engelhardt becomes the new Chairman of the Executive Management Board and in 2014 takes on the role of CEO and Managing Partner. Schüco re-focuses on the core business of metal fabrication and PVC-U.
Technology you can touch The Schüco Showroom opens in Bielefeld in 2013 with an interactive display of products. Following expansion in 2017, Schüco presents fascinating technologies and services in a space of over 800 m2. The most up-to-date exhibits demonstrate that the company has its finger on the pulse.
A good investment A new production hall measuring 6,300 m² is built in Weißenfels with eleven highly automated laminating lines for foiling and foil lamination of coloured PVC-U profiles.
Innovations The narrow face widths of the Schüco “FWS 35” façade system and “ASS 77 PD” sliding system allow almost frameless transparency. The “FWS 60 CV” façade system offers impressive concealed opening units. The “Parametric System” launched by Schüco in 2015 is the first three-dimensional façade system with a fully digital value creation process.
Building for the future Schüco lays the foundations for further growth with a €95 million strategic construction investment in the Bielefeld site. The aim is to build a modern campus with new working environments.
We know how At BAU 2017 in Munich, the leading global exhibition, Schüco celebrates its 66th anniversary and presents FireStop, the new fire and smoke protection range with an open-rebate profile. Other highlights include the textile façade FACID as well as universal digital solutions for all target groups.
Balanced By publishing the first sustainability report in accordance with the GRI G4 standard, Schüco is a construction industry pioneer in applied resource efficiency. The Cradle-to-Cradle-certified systems from Schüco facilitate resource-conserving construction from cradle to cradle and can be recycled without any loss of quality.
Combined forces Schüco expands its product portfolio. With its stake in Sälzer GmbH from Marburg, Schüco strives to significantly expand its business activities in the field of high security. With the purchase of Soreg AG in Switzerland, the focus is on the sale and marketing of high-end sliding systems.
Moving with the times In April, the first IHK “digital metal fabricator” certificate course from the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce is launched, which Schüco has set up with “Digital in NRW” and IHK-Akademie Ostwestfalen for digitalisation in metal fabrication.
