Product standard EN 16034
What is the EN 16034 standard? The product standard EN 16034 for doors and windows with fire and/or smoke protection properties in combination with EN 14351-1 for windows and external doors will enter into force on 1 November 2019. From this date, all national approvals for external doors and windows with fire and/or smoke protection properties will no longer be valid.
What does it have to do with me as a fabricator?
- What's changing and why is the date 1 November 2019 so important?

What's changing and why is the date 1 November 2019 so important?
EN 16034 has been harmonised and has been in force along with the national standards since its introduction in 2016.
This phase is called the coexistence phase. The coexistence phase in combination with EN 1435-1 for external doors and windows finishes on 1 November and EN 16034 will enter into force on 2 November 2019. On this date, all national approvals for external doors and windows with fire and smoke protection requirements will thereby become invalid.
Fire and smoke doors for internal use are currently not yet possible with CE markings. The reason for this is that EN 14351-2 has not yet been published in the European official journal. The coexistence phase can only start once the standard is published.
The length of the coexistence phase is not yet known. It will be at least one year, however. It is assumed that this phase will actually run for two years. We’ll keep you posted. Following the end of the coexistence phase for internal doors in accordance with EN 14351-2, the national approvals / general building authority test certificates will also no longer be valid here. Until then, the national marking (in Germany: approvals and Ü marking) can continue to be used.
Fire-resistant fixed glazing (F30, F60, F90) is not affected by the European standard. National approvals can continue to be used in future.
What does this have to do with me as a fabricator?
EN 16034 includes requirements for the manufacturer of fire and smoke protection barriers.
Fulfilment of the requirements in line with this standard is confirmed by means of a certificate of constancy of performance (issued by a product certification body). Once EN 16034 comes into force, this will enable the manufacturer to put products on the market with the CE marking.
How is Schüco supporting fabricators with regard to EN 16034?
The introduction of EN 16034 sounds like a lot of work for you as a fabricator, and it is.
However, the bulk of the work only needs to be carried out once.
We would like to support you as best we can here and offer you the following:
Why deal with this topic now?
As already mentioned, at the moment only EN 16034 and EN 14351-1 for external doors and windows are harmonised. The harmonised EN 14351-2 standard for internal doors is yet to be harmonised and published. As already mentioned, there will be a coexistence phase once the standard is published. The national approvals for internal use will continue to be valid up until the end of this coexistence phase.
Why do all the hard work now then?
- Competitive advantage, as all specifications can be handled (both in accordance with national rules and EN standards)
- Projects can also be implemented in EU territory
- Product enhancements are possible e.g. smoke doors for external use
- There is currently still sufficient capacity available with the product certification bodies
- The changeover will be necessary anyway in the medium term
