3511projects | Kilden Performing Arts Center This was the perfect wave for four young Finnish ar- chitects, who in 2005 were chosen as the winners of the international competition organised by the Norwegian town of Kristiansand and the Southern Norway region. Although the architects could not offer similar previous experience, the public sector clients nevertheless placed their trust in them to work together to construct the ambitious design. That was the inception of the ALA Architects team. Alongside the fundamental requirement of produc- ing high quality architecture - sensitively responding to the genius loci, the distinctive atmosphere loca- tion - the success story of this project was also a didactic endeavour to create complex architecture. This involved cooperation between the disciplines and learning from the best. The fact that the “wave” of the sweeping gesture would pose a problem of implementation was clear to everyone involved. But the ambition of the cli- ent, to initiate a transformation of the monofunc- tional industrial area located directly on the quay in southern Kristiansand into a vast recreational space characterised by the arts, was achieved in the boldly curving architecture. A structure with a high value of identification which would allow people to appropri- ate this location as a future living and recreational space. The cultural building can be seen from far out at sea and opens out towards the water with a full-height glass front, which at a distance appears to be carved into the wide funnel-shaped opening of the show fa- çade. Its curved upper closure clearly outlines the wave-shaped formwork made from local oak. The evenly divided façade creates total transparency with its large-scale panoramic windows. It gives an uninterrupted view over the harbour with its ships and crane devices, joining the interior and exterior almost seamlessly. The construction of the glass façade, which is self- supporting across spans of up to 16 metres in some sections, proved to be a task as equally demanding as the parametric design of the oak roof, the second component of the show façade. From very early on in the project, the expertise and skills of the Jansen AG design department were called upon.
