In terms of sustainability, the design of the facility is state-of-the-art. It includes a geothermal energy system with multiple 170 metre-long geothermal probes, air conditioning from a concrete core con- ditioning system, hollow core ceilings in which air- filled balls make the ceilings lighter without any loss of load-bearing capacity and a complete building automation system which regulates temperature, ventilation and light, with an energy measurement and monitoring system that analyses the effect of different measures. When designing the façade, Ben van Berkel’s team used the virtual reality model which had already been created for calculating the volume of the build- ing. In this way, the rounded building shape pro- vides the optimum ratio of façade area to construc- tion size. The proportion of glazed façade surfaces is thus just 32%. Schüco sawtooth windows were used, opening up the compact volume of the build- ing. CTB integrated solar shading from Schüco guar- antees ideal working conditions, even in very bright sunlight. Every window vent along the façade can be opened individually, allowing the rooms to be venti- lated naturally. One particular challenge was manu- facturing the 38 different colours of the sawtooth windows and façade units. They feature colour gra- dients in blue and orange, which indicate different building functions in the interior - either laboratories or office workstations. Each of the 284 windows had to be handled separately, since the units differ both in terms of geometry and colour. The foyer façades in the entrance area were created with a Schüco mullion/transom system and fabricated as a special construction. This allows the double-axis, arched profiles to carry the curved glazing which is up to up to 4.5 metres high. The German Sustainable Building Council (GeSBC) has certified the CVE for eco-friendliness, the high quality of the construction and also comfort for the user. The building was one of the first in Germany to receive a GeSBC gold certificate. Günther Wenzel from the Fraunhofer Institute confirms: “Interest in the building is huge”. The Fraunhofer Institute can only benefit from this, since the CVE is a showcase of what can now be achieved with 3D design. Britta Rohlfing
