12 11 Piller – Individualität und Personalisierung | dialog relatively easy to carry out. However, there is much more involved if you really want to implement mass customisation permanently. Three com- mon capabilities will determine the fundamental ability of a company to mass customise its products: (1) Solution Space Development: A mass customiser must first identify the idiosyncratic needs of its customers; specifically, the product attri- butes where customers need to diverge the most. Once that information is known and understood, a business can define its “solution space”, clearly delineating what it will offer – and what it will not. (2) Robust Process Design: Next, a mass customiser needs to ensure that an increased variability in customers’ requirements will not signifi- cantly impair the firm’s operations and supply chain. This can be achieved through robust process design – the ability to reuse or recombine exist- ing organisational and value-chain resources – to deliver customised so- lutions with near mass-production efficiency and reliability. (3) Support when selecting products: Lastly, a mass customiser must support customers in identifying their own problems and solutions while minimising complexity and the burden of choice. A company can provide choice navigation to simplify the ways in which people explore its offer- ings. Can you explain the concept of the “solution space” in more detail? The solution space states where a product can be customised and where it cannot. It also identifies which options or components of the goods can be customised and to what extent. In our experience, however, determin- ing this is extremely difficult, as classical market research is targeted at finding out where there are similarities between customers. Based on the results, the company then defines a cluster or a segment, within which it treats all the customers the same. However, exactly the opposite is required with mass customisation. The company must find out how the customers differ. And how important it is to them to have the option for customisation. A good mass customisation concept does not mean, however, that there also has to be a plethora of customisation solutions. MyMuesli belongs to the new generation of mass customisation providers. Customised goods can now also be produced at home using 3D printers. ©JensUlrichKoch ©www.mymuesli.com
