A piece of California at the Edersee

In the Edertal district of North Hesse, Germany, a family have realised their dream of Californian-style living. The large, barrier-free window doors in the living rooms of the weekend home open out onto a terrace with a stunning view over the water.

With an area of 11.8 km2, the Edersee is Germany's second-largest resevoir. It was built in 1914 and three villages had to be moved to higher ground to make way for the dam. In the last few decades, numerous weekend homes and campsites have popped up along the meandering shores. Located 40 km south-west of Kassel, the lake is now one of the most popular leisure spots in the region. Nature enthusiasts can enjoy a large area of undisturbed wilderness in the Kellerwald-Edersee national park to the south of the lake.

From their weekend home above the lakefront, the clients wanted to create a feeling like that of California, where they had lived some years previously. With the white timber house, its proximity to the water and the southern terraces facing the lake, only the weather could remind you that you are in the middle of Germany. Numerous tall windows allow sunlight into the living areas and constantly draw the gaze out towards nature and the lake. Meanwhile, lattice windows ensure a feeling of warmth and cosiness on cold and rainy days.

The highlight: barrier-free double-vent window doors

The family also had practical, everyday considerations, such as barrier-free access to the outside. Schüco AWS 75.SI+ double-vent window doors are installed in the rooms on both the upper entrance level and the lower garden level, providing barrier-free access onto the two southern terraces. A steel spiral staircase curls up the outside of the house, connecting the two outdoor areas. The architects limited the home's colour scheme to black and white – the aluminium profiles of the windows and doors, the external staircase and the large overhang of the mono-pitch roof are all black and are complemented by the light-coloured façades.

The double-vent design of the Schüco AWS 75.SI+ system was installed with a barrier-free level threshold for the first time in this home in Edertal. The window doors impress with watertightness class 7A, operating class 2 and burglar resistance to resistance class 2 (RC 2). What makes the level threshold special is that two continuous sealing levels ensure optimum weathertightness of the system. Water is channelled out via the integrated drainage with a non-return valve. Furthermore, the threshold gasket with delayed hydraulic lowering ensures an effortless closing process. The system enhancement is available from Schüco with different solutions for side-hung and turn/tilt window doors, or as a window above a spandrel with additional options.
