Raw material consumption: Amorphous modules are produced by depositing an extremely thin layer of silicon onto a substrate material. As a result, the semiconductor is much thinner than with crystalline modules. The amount of silicon needed to manufacture amorphous thin-film modules is only a faction of that required to make conventional modules. As a result, raw material consumption is reduced substantially.
Substrate material: In order to absorb light sufficiently, the silicon layer of crystalline solar cells has to be at least 100 μm. Through the use of amorphous silicon it can be reduced to 2 μm. The modules are no longer dependent on solid substrate materials such as glass or aluminum. The weight is reduced significantly, making it possible to produce and use large formats.
Energy output: Thin-film modules deliver good output values even in the presence of high operating temperatures, and they impress with their long service life and reduced harmful emissions during manufacture. Furthermore, diffuse light is utilized optimally and so the natural light spectrum is used perfectly. Calculated over one year, the larger share of diffuse light contributes to constant energy generation and significant output advantages per installed watt peak.
Design and transparency: Thin-film modules are impressive due to the ability to meet design requirements. Thanks to their uniform surface, they differ from conventional crystalline modules, whose appearance is characterized by the typical grid pattern. Through laser cutting and integration of films, transparencies, colors, patterns and logos can be integrated in the facade module.
