Resources: Ecology – Economy – Society
Resources are finite – natural resources such as raw materials as well as economic resources. The importance of people as a resource is becoming increasingly relevant as an economic factor. Planning, building, and refurbishing to optimize resource use, exploiting synergies, cutting costs, protecting resources, and recycling means not only being energy efficient and environmentally-friendly, but also being fair, socially conscious, and responsible. With controversial snapshots, profile 08 captures the mood of the industry, shows the effects of the zeitgeist on the construction industry, and gives a future outlook.

Resource Conflicts
The scarcer our resources, the more severe worldwide conflicts will become. With many non-renewable resources, the peak has already been reached or will be reached soon, or these resources are already scarce. Meanwhile, usage of renewable resources still has to be developed. The world’s population continues to grow, by around 80 million people a year, and companies are trying in various ways to win the competition for resources. But competition occasionally gives rise to new ideas and concepts, writes “Jahrbuch Ökologie”. The ecology yearbook’s co-publisher Prof. emeritus Dr. Udo E. Simonis talks with profile about resource problems.

Kungsbrohuset – Eco-genius. Independent. Flexible.
“When we decided to build Kungsbrohuset we knew that buildings are responsible for around 40 % of total energy consumption in the EU. We challenged ourselves and our architects to construct a building that uses a minimum amount of energy. Our architect designed the building according to energy calculations based on three environmental certifications. Making Kungsbrohuset energy efficient, however, is just one step towards making it an eco-smart building.”

Solar Building Envelope
Buildings are defined by their façades, which have always been much more than just merely envelopes. The façade is an important part of architectural debate. It can have a separating or connecting character, withdraw or be conspicuous like a signal. It not only protects a building against the elements but reflects the respective zeitgeist like a projection screen does.
