The Baytna project (“Baytna” is Arabic for “our home”) began in 2013 in Doha under the direction of the real estate company Barwa, the Qatar Green Building Council and the local energy and water supplier Kahramaa. Two neighbouring residential properties, which are identical in terms of size and floor plan, differ only in one decisive respect. While one was constructed in a conventional style, the second meets the German passive house standard. This is the result of a 37 centimetre-thick layer of insulation on all sides and the use of relatively small window areas implemented with the Schüco ADS 90.SI, AWS 90.SI, ASS 50, FW 60+ .SI and AWS 65 systems. A cantilevered rooftop grid spans the pas- sive house, with 136 solar panels which are respon- sible for energy generation. Two families occupy 225 m² each and are available for the progressive trial of this innovative style of residence. The devel- opers hope to achieve an energy saving of 50 % and bring about a long-term rethink of the established way of life here. The emirate of Qatar is one of the countries in the world with the highest level of CO2 emissions per inhabitant. A radical rethink is required. That is why the construction industry of this oil-rich country is setting an important example with the passive house pilot project “Baytna”, which features Schüco façade components. ©alle:SchücoInternationalKG,Bielefeld/GER 13
