8 13 enthalten. Wir haben nichts anderes. Diese Zahlen wurden inszeniert auf der Bühne der Zeit, und auf dieser Bühne spielen heute die Maschi- nen, die Computer. Welche Rolle spielt der Mensch auf dieser Bühne? Wir Menschen sind mit allem vernetzt, haben Zugriff zu allem, damit wir als aufrechte Personen auf dieser neuen Bühne stehen und unsere Eigenzeiten artikulieren können. Wir dürfen uns nur nicht mehr autori- tär vermessen lassen in einer absoluten Zeit. Das ist es ja, was die NSA gerade versucht. Wir werden uns frei bewegen können in einer Eigen- zeit, und, „gefüttert“ von unseren Netzen, unsere Identitäten kultivie- ren können. Diese neue Sicht auf uns und auf unsere individuelle Zeit, diese neue Sicht auf das, was das 20. Jahrhundert praktisch mit der Globalisierung, der Informationstechnik, der Kybernetik und der Elektri- fizierung hervorgebracht hat, wird meiner Meinung nach wieder mehr Ruhe in unsere turbulente Welt bringen. Sie sagen, mit Zahlen lässt sich alles beschreiben. Es gibt aber doch so viele Unvorhersehbarkeiten. Mathematik heißt ja „die Kunst des Lernens“. Bei den Zahlen geht es doch immer darum, wie wir in der prinzipiellen Unsicherheit die Welt einigermaßen organisieren können. Das Fantastische an den Zahlen ist doch, dass wir nicht erklären müssen, was wir im Detail zählen. (...) Und das ist auch das Fantastische an der Elektrizität! Von Holz wissen wir, dass wir damit heizen und kochen können. Mit Elektrizität lässt sich alles machen. Es ist einfach nicht festgelegt. Wobei wir wieder bei Ihrem Projekt Digital Grotesque wären. Hierzu noch eine Anmerkung bzw. eine Frage: Sie schreiben, es soll sich nicht auf einen Stil beziehen, aber allein schon der Name tut es ja. Wie lässt sich dieser Widerspruch erklären? Es gibt zwei Antworten auf diese Frage. Erstens: Der Strom selbst ist What role do people play on this stage? As people, we are linked to everything. You say that everything can be explained using numbers. But there is so much that is unforeseeable. Mathematics is the “art of learning”. With numbers, it is always about how we can somehow arrange the world in view of our principle un- certainty. What is so incredible about numbers is that we don’t have to explain what we are counting in detail. (...) And that is also what is so incredible about electricity. We know that we can heat and cook using wood. Electricity lets us do everything. It is simply not defined. Going back to your Digital Grotesque project, I have another comment or question about this – you have written that it is not intended to correspond to one style, but the name alone does this. How can you explain this contradiction? There are two answers to this question. Firstly, electricity itself is ab- stract, and we can only articulate this abstraction by doing something concrete with it, such as switching on a loudspeaker, a lamp or a heat- ing unit. Electricity can do all of those things. It is not specific. It is pre-specific. In that sense, it is the same as the type of design that is present in Digital Grotesque. We can do everything with informa- tion technology, which is also pre-specific.
