4312projects | House in Lierna The typical north Italian landscape, picturesque villages and imposing villas, which are beauti- fully strewn in groups along the seemingly endless stretches of water, are responsible for some spectac- ular views on Lake Como. Its unusual shape provides the “Lario” with the longest shoreline of all the Italian lakes, and consequently a wealth of panoramas and fascinating vistas of the tracts of land and cascades of houses on the opposite side. Medieval and mod- ern buildings tightly packed together around narrow streets on hillsides are interspersed with vast parks and gardens. For architectural historians, however, it is not only these building relics re ecting past styles that are important; a key gure and the co-founder of Rationalism, Giuseppe Terragni, hails from Lake Como. Like many of Terragni’s works left behind in this region, the Italian version of modernity pursues a clear, minimalist design in conjunction with classical principles of proportion and composition. A legacy which lives on in construction projects today. In Lierna, situated on the south-east branch of the body of water in the Alps, the task for the local ar- chitect Cesare Sala was to modernise an outmoded private home dating back to the 1960s. He decided to demolish the existing building and opted for a newbuild, whilst maintaining the volume and shape of the previous building. Due to the position of the property just a few metres from the water’s edge, the façade design is concentrated on the west side facing away from the street. By foregoing super u- ous stylistic features, the neutral and unostentatious design of the residence blends in with the lakeside scenery and the tradition of rationalist architecture. Two levels project out of the hillside here, and to- gether they form a cube with a shallow, pyramid- shaped roof and two balconies, stretching across the entire front which faces the lake. The white-plastered uniform façade is thus interrupted by two horizontal, deep recesses. When viewing the building, solid ar- eas are interspersed with openings. A slight colour and material contrast is created by the metal doors and windows, as well as tiles made from the grey, natural stone which is typical of the area on the roof and in the exterior design. IT Cesare Sala is the owner of the Cesare Sala Ingegnere architecture of ce, Lierna/IT
