2312dialog | Bringing values to life A house in the “10 x 10 Housing Initiative” in Mitchell’s Plain, a shanty town on the edge of Cape Town, South Africa, costs around 10,000 US dollars. In the pilot project, which was initiated by Design Indaba in 2008, the local building technique of mudbrick building was embraced. The two-storey load-bearing structure is made of wood, while the in ll consists of sacks lled with sand – a construction method which is at once economical, energy-ef cient and easy to implement. The climate in the houses is pleasant, as the sand walls have a high heat storage capacity and thus regulate the temperature. Wieland Gleich - ARCHIGRAPHY.com Bringing values to life They are at work in Chile, South Africa and Thailand: Architects and artists with social commitment and the will to ease the hard- ship in the poorest parts of the world and allow the people affected to share in the development. Their projects, which are mostly relatively small, are realised in collaboration with local organisations, which also establish contact with the population. The use of local techniques and materials as well as the involvement of the affected people in the realisation process characterise these ground-breaking projects. With the following examples, profile would like to demonstrate that ethics and aesthetics do not have to be mutually exclusive.
