Parametric design and construction refers to the seamless digital process chain that monitors and optimises how all the aspects interact. In this mathematical/digital process, generating the optimum shape is integrated in the same way as the structural analysis, the organisation of space, the materials and even the energy balance. Changing the value of one parameter in the digital system will affect the entire project. Many different aspects, focal points and effects are therefore, by definition, interconnected. But how does this affect design and construction? What role will parametric design play in the future of construction? As the Schüco Parametric Concept was being unveiled at the BAU 2013 exhibition, profile spoke to different architects and experts about their experiences with parametric design and manufacturing methods. This included Professor Tobias Wallisser and Dr Alexander Rieck from LAVA, Professor Achim Menges from the University of Stuttgart and Gerhard Hoffmann from the Institute for Applied Energy Simulation and Facility Management in Cologne. research11
