27 The new compact and streamlined Centre for Virtual Engineering is situated on a corner plot of the Stutt- gart University campus in Vaihingen. The Fraunhofer Institute of Industrial Engineering (IAO), which re- searches the working world of the future, now has a new ﬂagship building which houses state-of-the- art ofﬁces, laboratories and demonstration centres, all over four storeys. The creator of this striking and groundbreaking new ofﬁce building is none other than Ben van Berkel, who also designed another Stuttgart landmark, the Mercedes-Benz Museum. The Dutch architect and his agency UNStudio have achieved another coup with the IAO newbuild – per- haps not to the scale of the museum, but in a simi- larly impressive style. Flowing shapes and a sparkling white metal façade illustrate the cutting-edge self-perception of the in- habitants – the CVE investigates “problems of the future”. The building situated on the periphery of the Fraunhofer campus makes a ﬁtting statement, transporting both its content and function to the exterior architecture and thus shaping the new “House of Knowledge Work”. The building blends smoothly and modestly into the landscape and campus, retaining its distinctive character without ostentatiously distancing itself from the neighbour- ing buildings. The extension connects the structure to the old institute building and succeeds not only visually, but also functionally. The project was de- veloped and implemented as a collaboration be- tween UNStudio, who were responsible for design and 3D visualisation, and the Asplan agency – ex- ceptionally experienced architects from Kaiserlaut- ern specialising in higher education establishments and laboratories – who dealt with planning and site management. Right from the start, employees of the Fraunhofer IAO were also part of the development team, contributing their comprehensive expertise in research on innovative working- and ofﬁce con- cepts. This Fraunhofer Institute specialises in the development of visual and digital technology and so the newbuild was also a pilot project for its own research. Das Fraunhofer-Institut für Arbeitswirt- schaft und Organisation IAO, das Arbeitswelten der Zukunft erforscht, erhält damit ein neues repräsen- tatives Gebäude, das auf vier Etagen modernste Bü- ros, Labore und Demonstrationszentren beherbergt. Urheber dieses markanten und Maßstäbe setzenden Büroneubaus ist kein anderer als Ben van Berkel, der Stuttgart bereits mit dem Bau des Mercedes- Benz-Museums ein Wahrzeichen schenkte. Mit dem Neubau des IAO gelingt dem niederländischen Ar- chitekten und seinem Büro UNStudio ein weiterer Coup – zwar nicht in eben jenem großen Maßstab wie dem des Museums, aber in ähnlich überzeugen- der Manier. Fließende Formen und eine weiß glänzende Me- tallfassade zeugen von der modernen Selbstauffas- sung des Bauherrn – das ZVE erforscht gewisser- maßen Fragestellungen der Zukunft. Das Gebäude, am Rande des Fraunhofer Campus gelegen, setzt ein adäquates Statement, transportiert Inhalte und Funktionen nach außen, die das neue „Haus der Wissensarbeit“ prägen. Leicht und unaufgeregt glie- dert sich das Gebäude in Landschaft und Campus ein, ohne sich den Bestandsbauten anbiedern oder protzig absetzen zu müssen. Als Erweiterungsbau gelingt die räumliche Anbindung an das alte Insti- tutsgebäude sowohl optisch als auch funktional. Die Entwicklung und Umsetzung erfolgte in einer Zusammenarbeit von UNStudio – zuständig für Ent- wurf und 3-D-Visualisierung – mit dem Büro Asplan, äußerst erfahrenen Hochschul- und Laborarchitek- ten aus Kaiserslautern, die Ausführungsplanung und Bauleitung verantworteten. Ebenfalls von Anfang an mit im Entwicklungsteam: Mitarbeiter des Fraun- hofer IAO, die ihre umfangreichen Kenntnisse zur Erforschung innovativer Arbeits- und Bürokonzepte mit einﬂießen ließen. Denn für dieses Fraunhofer Institut, das sich auf die Entwicklung visueller, digi- taler Technologien spezialisiert hat, war der Neubau sozusagen Pilotforschung am eigenen Projekt.
