1311dialog | Piller – Individuality and personalisation Mass Customisation and Personalisation in Architec- ture and Construction Das im Juni 2013 erschienene, 272 Seiten starke Buch befasst sich mit den neuesten Entwicklungen der Mass Customization im Baubereich – von flexiblen Fertigungsver- fahren bis hin zu visionären Konzepten in der Stadtplanung. Mass Customisation and Person- alisation in Architecture and Con- struction The book (272 pages) published in June 2013 deals with the latest developments in mass customisation in the construction in- dustry – from flexible production process- es to visionary concepts of urban planning. Mass Customization and Personalisation in Architecture and Construction Mass Customisation and Personalisation in Architecture and Construction Herausgegeben von Edited by: Poorang Piroozfar, Frank Piller Verlag Publisher: Routledge Sprache Language: Englisch English ISBN: 978-0-415-62284-4 (Paperback), 978-0-415-62283-7 (Hardback) Marktforschung ist darauf ausgerichtet, zu erfahren, wo Kunden gleich sind. Was genau steckt da- hinter? On the contrary, it has been demonstrated that a greater solution space is a hindrance, as it engenders a higher level of complexity and therefore leads to higher costs. However, finding the optimum level of customisa- tion is not at all easy, and many a failed mass customisation provider has underestimated it completely. 3D printers are all the rage at the moment. What exactly is behind this? It generally only makes sense to use a 3D printer if I want to custom- fabricate products or produce them in very small quantities. 20 years ago it was unimaginable that something like this would ever be possible. They are the purest form of the robust processes explained previously. Today there are companies like Ponoko, Shapeways, iMaterialize and a whole host of internet platforms that allow products to be manufactured from home. The complete digitalisation of production is actually far more relevant in this regard than 3D printing technology. Take emachineshop.com for example. Here, the customer downloads the easy-to-operate, free CAD software, and uses this to design their desired product or uses existing designs from the internet. The resulting digital model can then be produced via the internet on the wide range of ma- chinery at emachineshop, by means of 3D printers, laser processing and CNC cutters to name but a few. It is much like printing a document at the office using a network printer. A few days later, the finished product will land on your doorstep. This allows you to take advantage of a wide range of machinery without the high transaction costs. The possibilities are almost endless: There is currently much discussion surrounding these platforms because weapons can also be produced in this way – without the ability to monitor it. Of course this development is worrying, but on the other hand it demonstrates that 3D printing is fit for the future and is also suitable for complex items. It also shows that we need new social and political discussions about this technology. Finally, what impact does mass customisation have on your daily life – not including your job? I mostly use mass customisation in the form of customised information. There is a whole host of services and recommender systems that I would not want to be without nowadays – systems such as Google Scholar, a search engine for academic literature. For me, the personalisation of pro- cesses is much more useful and far more important than personalised, customised muesli – even if I do often eat it!
